Far from a Royal Ascot washout...

Hats galore at Royal Ascot this year and the whackier the better we say... enough to make even Anna Dello Russo feel right at home (especially the cherry headpiece). Nice to see that many race-goers taking AVFF's advice from our summer events special vintage fair and opted for unique and classic vintage pieces to accessorize their looks. We picked the best vintage and 'vintagesque' looks from 4 day Racing event, the pouring rain didn't put off these starlets...

Amanda Holden was one of the few celebs to hit the right mark with her Ascot look - a 50's style floral print tea dress with oversized bow with her nude pink Aspinal Hepburn bag and Hat by DeDe Valentine. Image (lrft) via Telegraph Fashion & Image (Right) via Yahoo.

Many also paid homage to Her Majesty's 60 year reign of the British Monarchy with Royal colours and English connotations. Some went that little further than others...

From Mother, With Love

AVFF is an avid fan of www.frommotherwithlove.co.uk and have been since it launched earlier this year. We have routinely been clicking on to indulge in the intriguing stories, wonderful memories and enchanting old photographs featured on this captivating archive.

The founder and creator of 'From Mother, With Love', Emily Rose Froud has cleverly transformed her online showcase into beautifully produced hardback book; which AVFF just absolutely loves. Lucky enough to view the original version of the ‘From Mother, With Love’ book at Graduate Fashion Week, we wanted to share with you, this wonderful project.

Graduate Fashion Week 2012

On Wednesday 13th June AVFF headed on over to Earls Court where Graduate Fashion Week which is now in its 21st year. Excited to see fresh design talent in the Gala Fashion show we were especially keen to see AVFF alumni uni's. We love to support young graduates and last years GFW is where we first spotted our talented illustrator Madalen Dixon.

The Class of 2012: Caryn Franklin with the Graduates

The Gala Show is a round-up of crème de la crème of graduate designers for 2012 across all disciplines it also attracts a star-studded celebrity guests too and AVFF spotted Matthew Williamson, Hilary Alexander , Suzy Menkes, Daphne Guiness and Julien McDonald to name but a few on the front row.

Here is our summary of GFW Gala Fashion Show - International, Knitwear & Textiles:

The International designers kicked of the show and Maria Martimo two tone tailoring was a sophisticated and wearable offering. The eye-popping accents flattered the softer flowing silhouettes of the romantic dresses.

Kwok's inspirations for her collection was marionette dolls, carnivals and punk which could be seen in corsetry, pleated skirts and neon colours. The multiple layers added texture and interest.

Karen Jessen collection was a mixture of mediums, from pinhole leather to fringed knitwear and was awarded The International Award.

One of AVFF's stand out of the international collections as the retro theme appealed to us. We loved the photographic equipment props as a hint to the photographic element to the garments. Constructed from hundreds of tonal pieces which looked like an underdeveloped snap, it evoked a paco rabanne glamour.

EMMA WALSH (NOTTINGHAM TRENT)

Emma's sports luxe knitwear had super slim lines and muted tones were reflected in each garment.

JOUSIANNE PROPP (MANCHESTER)

Propp is heavily influenced by her diverse interest in cultural contexts, philosophy, art, science and architecture. She incorporates strong, sculptural pattern cutting and textures into her work and this collection did not disappoint. Scooping the knitwear award presented by Christopher Bailey her body con knits with organic growing capes were a hit with the judges.

She was also the finalist for the childrenswear collection for George at GFW.

CAITLIN CHARLES JONES (KINGSTON)

Jones as managed tp pick up the knitwear award for her futuristic approach with flashes of yellow, black, orange almost in sports car graphics. The diamante knits had a wonderfully sporty twist.

AMELIA SMITH (NORTHUMBRIA)

Russian dolls paraded down the catwalk as Mary Katrantzou style prints and shapes were a major influence in this collection. The bold graphics a furry earmuffs added dimension.

Roz Lamkin, who had already had her collection shown on ITV’s This Morning, was a finalist for the Zandra Rhodes Catwalk Textiles Award. Her cityscape prints on silk were really versatile and wearable and the feminity of the overall pieces juxtaposed the harsh lines of urban prints.

XIAOPING HUANG (LANCHASHIRE)

A bonkers but we loved it collection of accordion craziness and explosion of colours. The Jack-in-the-box style assemble impressed judge Mary Katrantzou, who found it an "amazing breath of creativity and intelligent approach" and won the print award.

Gold Nominees

RIONA HORROX (EDINBURGH)

CLAIRE ACTON (CENTRAL LANCHASHIRE)

JAMES WALKER (UCA EPSOM)

GEORGINA KENNEDY (SALFORD)

CHARLI COHEN (KINGSTON)

EMMA BEAUMONT (ROCHESTER)

EMILY EDGE (NORTHUMBRIA)

CHLOE GAROOD (EAST LONDON)
